I think we all know that we create endless amounts of plastic in our kitchens and as much as I have talked about reusing what we have, eventually we will run out of plastic wraps, bags and other things that we use to store our food. And since I am committed to not buying those things anymore, I have been researching affordable, useful and lasting alternatives. I am a fan of beeswax wraps and as I mentioned in my previous post, I love to find good reusable storage bags. Sometimes it is overwhelming to know where to start and what to buy, so I found this wonderful starter set by Might Nest for anyone who wants to store food without plastic. It includes all the best and most useful essentials for the kitchen. And since I love the company and believe in the quality of their products, I am smitten with it.
A brief overview
This set includes the following:
- A one gallon zip bag: This bag is perfect for storing fruits, vegetables, bread or other baked goods in the fridge.
- A half gallon silicone storage bag: This one is leak proof and can be used for marinating and storing all types of food.
- Beeswax wrap, a pack of three: These can be used to wrap bread, cheese, vegetables, butter or they can cover a bowl
- Five silicone slip on covers: The silicone covers are very usable and a great alternative to plastic wrap. They come in different sizes and can be used to preserve any cut up fruit and veggies.
- One 8″ cotton bowl cover: This cover has a stretchable edge and therefore can be used for a variety of different sized bowls. It provides short-term breathable storage.
Some fun facts about beeswax wrap
Beeswax wrap are made by infusing pieces of cotton or muslin with food grade beeswax. Usually it’s a mixture of beeswax, pine rosin and oil (Jojoba or Coconut). This mixture of ingredients creates natural antibacterial properties that can be used over and over again. Because the cloth is now coated with wax, it is waterproof but breathable and therefore can be used to keep food fresh. When you wrap it around a bowl or piece of food, the warmth of your hand makes it easy to shape the wrap as needed. It creates a seal after it cools down within seconds.
The best way to care for beeswax wraps is to rinse them with cold water and a small amount of dish soap, let them air dry and store in a drawer or basket. The great thing about beeswax wraps is that it can even be used to freeze food for up to 2-3 weeks. Since the wrap is breathable, it is not recommended for long periods of time. Another important factor is that beeswax wrap should not be used to wrap raw meat.
Beeswax wrap can last up to a year with proper care and usage. After that they can either be thrown into your compost bin or (and I just found out about that) be used as a natural and very effective fire starter.
The pros about this starter set
What I love about this set is that it is well-made and of high quality ingredients. Yes, it is a bit pricey, but I think when you look for these kinds of products, you want to be sure of the quality. There are many, many zero waste kits out there, but I can personally vouch for this one. The bags will last and the covers will become a daily essential. We are all busy people and very much used to conveniences and buying a set is convenient and simple. The great thing about getting a variety of reusable food storage supplies at once is that it provides a complete solution for your storage needs in the kitchen and then you won’t need anything else for a while. Simple!
There are some cons in my opinion
I would say that the cons apply to most sets that you can find. Firstly, the amount of wraps and bags is pretty limited and after a whil, you will notice that it would be good to invest in a few more gallon size bags and some silicone storage bags.
Secondly, it is relatively easy to make beeswax wraps yourself and I will explain the whole process in a future post. I think it will be much more cost effective in the long run to invest in a few essentials, rather than continue to buy them. But I think it’s great to start out with a few to see how it works and get used to using them.
And last but not least, to be hones the cotton cover is great, but I don’t think it’s necessary. Instead, I personally would rather have an additional wrap or bag.
Is it worth it
Yes, I believe that it is. We are a consumer oriented society and we all spend money on things we don’t necessarily need. We have all come across sales that we thought were too good to pass up in order to find that what we purchased was either not good quality or we didn’t need it after all. I think we can all think of closets, drawers and cabinets in our house that are full of things that we spent money on, but now we don’t even remember that we have them. The truth is that investing in something that is made of sustainable and good materials, that we use on a daily basis and is good for our planet, is always worth it. And it doesn’t hurt to change our thinking from “quantity over quality” to “quality over quantity”. That is what will ultimately save us money in the long run.
I also want to say that maybe this isn’t the best starter kit out there, but it’s the best one I was able to find. When I purchase things, I try to always research the company as well. I might find different versions of similar products much cheaper elsewhere, but if I can afford it, I would rather spend more and support a company that’s worth supporting.
I am giving you just different ways to think about it. And if you are reading this, my guess is that you will most likely agree with me. So, let me know in the comments what you think. Do you know of other zero waste starter kits you have tried and loved? And if you are buying this one or have bought it already, let me know if you agree with me or if your experience with this set was different. I would love to know.
As always, thank you for taking the time to read through this! And here’s to a better future and a healthier planet!
